The power of modern heating systems lies not only in their advanced design, optimised for performance, but also in their control systems. Building automation is able to independently coordinate the operation of the heating device, water system and receivers installed in individual rooms. The simplest systems are manual control, the precision of which is sufficient to ensure comfort in the building.
Control options for water heaters
The development of control technology has reached also water heaters. EC fans with high efficiency in a wide range of adjustment. Nothing prevents you from connecting a simple controller with a potentiometer and use it to select the right speed of the flow.
However, the control over the operation of the heater does not end there. Installation of electronically controlled valves allows you to change the flow of heating water, and thus its temperature in the heater. This translates directly to the supply air temperature. In combination with the ability to control the fan, this gives a very large control over the room heating. Controllers, in combination with temperature sensors, allow for the automation of operation of the heaters. The user only sets the desired temperature, and the fan speed and the flow of the heating medium are adjusted in such a way as to achieve it. An interesting feature is the option of weekly programming, which allows for setting hours of operation of the heater. Depending on the capabilities of the device, heating and cooling modes are available.
Cooperation with building automation
The next level of advanced heating control is its integration with the building automation system. In the case of the already mentioned HMI-sonnEC, it is possible thanks to bus RS 485 with the ModbusRTU protocol, with the use of which the controller can be connected to the building management system (BMS).
The possibilities of BMS are very wide – its role is to integrate and manage all intelligent systems installed in the building – an office building, commercial facility or hotel. Depending on the needs, it controls electrical installations, lighting, audio-video devices, ventilation and heating. The system operation is usually very simple. There are small control panels mounted on the walls with a display showing the current status and the desired parameters (such as room temperature). Remote controls are also used.
Building automation takes care not only of the comfort of users, but also their safety. Depending on the conditions inside and outside the building, it selects the appropriate operating parameters of individual systems. Everything takes place with a minimum human intervention.
Technology in the service of comfort
Control of the heating system can take place in many ways. In the simplest version, it allows manual adjustment of individual parameters. On the other hand, the most extensive systems monitor, analyse and adjust them to the temperature the user wants. They are very useful in large buildings that consist of many zones where people are present and that have various heat receivers.
